Super League: Season XI 2024-25
Super League: Season XI 2024-25
By Andreas Mitsis
The 100-year-old champions returned to the throne. Olympiakos became too strong for the other top rivals in the second half of the season and was able to win its 48th league title of all time and has an incredible time behind it with domestic and European titles in its luggage. Stay tuned as the undersigned summarizes the Super League 2024-25.
The champions are back on the throne. We looked like we were heading towards a new league season where we would have excitement right up to the finish line, but during the spring Olympiakos sailed away and secured the title in mid-April, which was halfway into the playoffs.
They were simply too strong for the other top competitors. The championship playoffs and the European playoffs ended on the weekend of May 10-11, while the playout ended as late as last Thursday (5/22). Out in Europe, 12,687 points were scraped together by our five Greek representatives.
Thus, we are strongly building on the fine points harvest from last year. A total of just over 24,000 recorded coefficient points within the course of two seasons in the UEFA rankings. It is one of many joys in our football these times.
The 2021-22 season was the last time Olympiakos stood as league champion. After a couple of years of waiting, it was time for the big club from Piraeus to step back on the throne. Finally, the reigning champions won their 48th league title overall, with a good margin down to second place.
The 2021-22 season was the last time Olympiakos stood as league champion. After a couple of years of waiting, it was time for the big club from Piraeus to step back on the throne. Finally, the reigning champions won their 48th league title overall, with a good margin down to second place.
Fittingly, Olympiakos thus crowned the 100th anniversary celebrated during the season by adding another league title to their collection. As if that wasn't enough, it was a double as they defeated OFI in the cup final on May 17 at a festive OAKA, for which the new ambitious federation board should take all the credit. "Thrylos"'s latest period has been something out of the ordinary.
Last spring, Olympiakos won two UEFA titles in the form of the U19-team triumphing in the UEFA Youth League and the senior team in turn going all the way in the UEFA Europa Conference League. Unique from a European perspective. Both historic titles were also won in a mighty impressive manner.
From the 2010-11 season onwards, only Olympiakos and Porto have managed to break the five classic major leagues' subscriptions to the European cup titles. Owner Vangelis Marinakis has been at the helm of the club for 15 years and has ensured that the big club has been in constant progression on all fronts.
The next step in the development is to carry out major upgrades to the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in the near future. Around the corner is a summer for Olympiakos where the club can calmly plan for the upcoming season as the team is directly qualified for next season's edition of the Champions League and does not have to qualify.
Panathinaikos finished second and will thus qualify for the Champions League this summer. The greens from the capital changed coaches in the autumn from Diego Alonso to Rui Vitória. Enough that things looked better with the Portuguese but they have not really convinced. The 55-year-old has still not made a clear mark of his own on the team.
Vitória will, however, stay and at least start on the coaching bench next season. The squad needs to be strengthened at the same time as we can expect one or two major player sales. Fotis Ioannidis, Georgios Vagiannidis and Tetê all have many admirers. The former could not, for various reasons, live up to the high expectations placed on him after last year's success and Ioannidis was not as highly regarded by Vitória as he was by previous coaches.
When it comes to the eternal question of the construction of the new stadium at Votanikos, which would give Panathinaikos a much-needed boost in general, steps in the right direction have continued to be taken. The most optimistic reports claim that the stadium will be ready in late spring 2027. Those who live will see.
Further up to Thessaloniki and third-placed PAOK, where EL qualification awaits. They failed to defend the league title from last year and lacked certain decisive factors this season, especially in the offensive. In addition, most of the new signings contributed to far too little extent. Coach Razvan Lucescu's future has been somewhat diffuse.

They failed to defend the league title from last year and lacked certain decisive factors this season, especially in the offensive. In addition, most of the new signings contributed to far too little extent. Coach Razvan Lucescu's future has been somewhat diffuse.
The Romanian is the most successful coach of all time, but there has been some uncertainty about whether he would lead the team further when it is PAOK's turn to enter its 100th anniversary season in 2025-26. Some differences of opinion regarding the plans for next season are said to have existed between the board and Lucescu, but the latest reports claim that he will stay and, in that case, will try to address some obvious concerns in the formation of the player squad together with the board/sports league management.
At the last home match at Toumba earlier this month, PAOK said goodbye to the legendary Vieirinha. The Portuguese, who has become at least as much a Greek over the years, has chosen to hang up his boots and he does so as one of the greatest players of all time at the club. He is in talks to continue in some kind of position within PAOK. We should not forget to mention that many foreigners have a special emotional connection with their club and Greece as a country in general, which is definitely not seen as often in other countries. It is proof of a lot. Zeca in Panathinaikos is also another recent example of this.
AEK is facing a form of extreme makeover. Last summer, ownership was changed from Dimitris “Tigris” Melissanidis to Marios Iliopoulos. An experienced and important owner in the club’s history was replaced by a fresh but very hungry gentleman in the 55-year-old businessman who also owns the ferry company SeaJets.

An experienced and important owner in the club’s history was replaced by a fresh but very hungry gentleman in the 55-year-old businessman who also owns the ferry company SeaJets.
Iliopoulos went on the offensive immediately where he made his mark by bringing in big names on big contracts in the form of Anthony Martial and Erik Lamela. The squad became unbalanced where there was, among other things, an abundance of players in the attacking midfield.
Coach Matías Almeyda tried to change the tactical approach a bit and switched to a more set/controlled attacking game. In summary, it has been a messy season for AEK and the end of the championship play-off was under all criticism, including boos at home to Agia Sophia.
Almeyda will leave after three years in the coaching position and Iliopoulos has hopefully learned some lessons. To begin with, he is said to have given all the power to sporting director Javier Ribalta to steer things up and ahead of 2025-26.
Aris is the club in Europe's top 30 national leagues that uses foreign players the most. Only a shameful 2% of the squad's total playing time during the season has gone to Greek players. This is something the club has given indications of wanting to change ahead of 2025-26.

Greek players are on the agenda and will join, which is the wish of both the board and coach Marinos Ouzounidis. Fifth place and first place in the European playoffs have given Aris a qualifying ticket to the Europa Conference League this summer. Behind them in the table were Asteras Tripolis, Atromitos and OFI.
Regarding Atromitos, owner Georgios Spanos, after many years of good deeds at the club, seems to be looking for a way out and is looking for a worthy successor. Spanos has previously stated that he would leave but still stayed. This time, however, it is probably more likely to become a fact than ever before. Provided that Spanos finds someone suitable to buy his majority shareholding and drive the Peristeri club forward.
The winner of the playout was Levadiakos, who finished in a fine ninth place for them. Kalithea and the former Lamia went down to Super League 2 with a bang. Lamia was a success last year but has completely collapsed this season and the club is also struggling with financial problems.

Up from Super League 2 will happily be classic Larissa along with Kifisia, who is also coached by former Panathinaikos icon Sebastian Leto.

After the summary, it is time to traditionally direct the spotlight on the players who shone the most during the 2024-25 league season. Not unexpectedly, champions Olympiakos dominate the selection. The selection is based on the performances during the 26 regular rounds and the efforts in the playoff/playout game.

Coach:José Luis Mendilibar (Olympiakos)
Comment: What a success story. Mendilibar became owner Marinaki's 14th foreign coach [ Link ] since his takeover of the club and in just 15 months at the helm, the 64-year-old Spaniard from the noble Basque coaching school has managed to leave an everlasting mark on the big club from Piraeus. Confident in himself, he advocates pragmatic football with strong elements of, for example, high-quality pressing play which can strangle the opposition and a fairly direct attacking game. This season has also, for various reasons, contained an unusually high amount of passing play than we are used to in modern football. Did an excellent job and also played an important part in guiding a couple of Olympiakos' promising UEFA Youth League winning youngsters from last season. Mendilibar worships discipline, structure and is methodical and inclusive in his way of being. The players give everything for him and the team. A low-key profile but incredibly lovable who followed up the Europa League win with Sevilla in 2022-23 and the UEFA Europa Conference League last year with Olympiakos by winning his first national league title in his coaching career in 2024-25.
Starting XI

Goalkeeper: Kostantis Tzolakis (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 31/0
Comment: The 22-year-old was given full trust by Mendilibar last spring and did not disappoint him. Tzolakis has been a great promise for many years and has worked hard and been patient in waiting for his big chance. He was essential in Olympiakos winning the UEFA Europa Conference League in an impressive way last year. Until this season, he has continued to convince between the posts. One of the most important qualities of a goalkeeper is to be able to instill confidence and that is something Tzolakis has done to the rest of the team to a very high degree. He has taken over the place as first goalkeeper in the national team and his market value has risen to up to 20 million euros.
Right-back: Rodinei (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 29/4
Comments:Brassen barely knew a word of English when he made the move from South America to Europe for the first time in his career at the turn of the year between 2023 and 2024. Rodinei now speaks decent English but has also embraced Greek culture. In his 2.5 years in Piraeus, he has grown into a cult figure. Compared to last season, the right-back has also played further up the field as a right winger in 2024-25. Rodinei has created lots of goal chances, contributed goals/assists and worked hard in both directions. Showed a winning mentality which goes hand in hand with the club's DNA. Optimist with a constant smile on his face which is contagious and creates a positive climate. Has been a great leader for the team both on and off the field. A bit of a star and a hard worker in one and the same package. The MVP of the season.
Centerback: Jakub Brabec (Aris)
Matches/Goals: 29/3
Comment: The Czech with 41 international caps has been at Charilaou with Aris for four seasons. Very reliable defender. He has a good understanding of the game and good positional play. Strong and relatively confident in using both feet. The 32-year-old made a difference for Aris in the European playoffs between the clubs that finished in 5th-8th place in the regular season, where the centerback, in addition to stable defensive play, also delivered a couple of goals up front.

Centerback: Lorenzo Pirola (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 21/0
Comment: The champions have had a very strong quartet of centerbacks where, regardless of the constellation, it has looked basically equally strong centrally in the defense. Team captain Panagiotis Retsos has been sidelined with a few injuries, but when he has played, the centerback has been brilliant. The Italian Pirola has been equally brilliant and has had a very positive impact on the team's defense. The captain of the Italian U21 national team was bought from Salernitana for the season and the big clubs in Serie A have already regretted losing him from the country's borders. Left-footed Pirola is a more traditional centre-back where his main strengths lie in doing all the fundamentals in defence in a good way. He is very skilled in the duel game with a strong percentage in the number of duels won and very good man-to-man.
Left-back: Marios Vichos (Levadiakos)
Matches/Goals: 31/3
Comment:Levadiakos has formed a fine all-Greek back line on many occasions this season consisting of Triantafyllos Tsapras, Panagiotis Liagas, Georgios Katris and left-back Marios Vichos. The 25-year-old is a local guy from the nearby town of Itea and has been part of Levadiakos from a young age. Vichos has over 130 matches under his belt and has slowly but surely developed into a left-back to be reckoned with. Has been responsible for quality plays from the left wing and overall has shown a wide range. Rumored to be on his way to Panathinaikos for next season.

Central Midfielder: Mady Camara (PAOK)
Matches/Goals: 29/9
Comment: One of the few bright spots for the reigning champions. The former Olympiakos midfielder made the somewhat unexpected move to PAOK in June last year and has done a solid job in PAOK's midfield where he has had to carry an unexpectedly large load. Through his versatility, Camara has contributed to the team in several different ways. The most notable thing is that he has scored several match-winning goals and that almost all of them have come with his head.
Attacking Midfielder: Chiquinho (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 28/8
Comment: Chiquinho has had perhaps his best season of his career. He came to the big club from Piraeus last winter for a measly 500,000 euros because he was on an expiring contract at Benfica. You will have to look for more value for money in a player. The Portuguese is an incredibly versatile midfielder. He possesses high technical ability which he combines with a number of other qualities. He was responsible for a couple of heavy goals against the run-in. Excellent in Mendilibar's way of playing football and Chiquinho is one of, if not the single most important player in the team's pressing game.

Offensive Midfielder: Azzedine Ounahi (Panathinaikos)
Matches/Goals: 25/4
Comment: Showed himself seriously to the wide audience for the first time in the 2022 World Cup for his Morocco when they came in a nice fourth place. The 25-year-old Moroccan national team midfielder has been the greens from the capital's best player in the league game. A bit of a slow start last fall but has been brilliant since the turn of the year. Incredible eye for the game and can perform absolutely decisive actions through his exceptional technique. Not much affected by being pressured but very skilled at playing his way out of all possible situations. Nice collaboration especially with Tetê and Vagiannidis. Has been on loan at Panathinaikos from Marseille. It remains to be seen if the greens can manage to row ashore a deal that allows him to continue wearing the trefoil on his chest. The ball is already rolling.
Offensive Midfielder: Gelson Martins (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 26/7
Comment:As wonderful as it can be to watch the whirlwind Gelson Martins, it can sometimes be just as frustrating to watch him. Incredibly quick offensive midfielder who can dribble past several players in the same action and then fail miserably with the decisive pass or finish. In other words, he mixes and gives in terms of the final product but has scraped together a more than respectable number of goals and assists this season, [ Video ]. Important for the Portuguese national team's fine season has been that the winger has managed to stay away from injuries, which earlier in his career has hampered his progress.
Striker: Ayoub El Kaabi (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 29/18
Comment: Goals, goals and more goals. El Kaabi is synonymous with goals. The 31-year-old Moroccan national team striker is one of the top scorers we have seen in Olympiakos. An incredible goalscorer. El Kaabi is not the best striker we have encountered in the open game, but his way of moving, combining and getting to goal chances is almost unique. Possesses a fantastic finishing technique. Bombed in almost 60 goals in total in two seasons in the red and white shirt. Winner of the Conference League top scorer last year and the Europa League this season, he has been slightly injured and worn out towards the end of the season due to tough matches earlier in the season, but was relieved in an exemplary way at that time by Ukrainian national team striker Roman Yaremchuck.

Striker: Jefté Betancor (Panserraikos)
Matches/Goals: 30/19
Comment: A Spaniard who has been around many different countries but would prove to be a rugged sensation in Serres. The striker has impressed with his work ethic and, above all, his skill in the offensive penalty area. In the right place at the right time and very fearless of himself. 31-year-old Betancor was noted for goals in eight straight league matches during the autumn. Scoring 16 goals for Panserraikos inspires respect. Ready for Olympiakos since last winter where he will get the chance to show himself in the upcoming pre-season.

Substitutes

Goalkeeper: Lucas Chaves (Panetolikos)
Matches/Goals: 36/0
Comment: 29-year-old relatively short goalkeeper from Argentina. A fierce shot-stopper who had the most saves of all goalkeepers during the regular season. In the playout, Chaves was responsible for the majority of the point-winning saves, which meant that Panetolikos was extremely close to knocking Levadiakos into ninth place. Skilled in positioning himself correctly, quick and excellent in the game with his feet. His loan from Argentinos Juniors expires the calendar year but Panetolikos wants to try to make the contract permanent already in the summer. Takes the place ahead of Panserraikos' Georgian national team goalkeeper Luka Gugeshashvili who will join PAOK this summer.
Right-back: Borja González (OFI)
Matches/Goals: 28/5
Comment: Joined the Cretan club from the Segunda División in Spain ahead of the season. Went relatively unnoticed in the first few months but from December onwards he couldn't help but notice. Very productive offensively where he contributed in the form of goals and assists. The 29-year-old has a brilliantly fine strike on the ball which OFI has been able to benefit from in set-piece situations. González's contract also extends beyond next season but a buyout clause of only 200,000 euros has attracted interest from big clubs, especially PAOK.

Right-back: Georgios Vagiannidis (Panathinaikos)
Matches/Goals: 27/1
Comment: There will be another full-back and more specifically another right-back on the bench. Many full-backs have performed well in 2024-25 and that automatically leaves its mark on this season's team. Vagiannidis was sidelined for a period early last fall when he and the club could not agree on a new contract. With the tragic passing of colleague George Baldock, only Vagiannidis and Giannis Kotsiras were left as alternatives. Vagiannidis and the club agreed on a contract extension. The 23-year-old has also made the right-back spot in the national team his during the second part of the season through his impressive efforts. Fierce offensive drive and can change matches through his initiatives from the right wing. In the competition for the spot were mainly Atromitos left-back Nikos Athanasiou who was still able to get the spot, Asteras tough center-back Simon Deli, PAOK's Baba Rahman and Panathinaikos machine Filip Mladenovic who also deserves to be mentioned in this context.
Central Midfielder: Dani García (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 27/0
Comment: Pablo Orbaiz, Vicente Iborra and now Dani García. All three Spaniards have played in Olympiakos and all have proven to be worth their weight in gold in defensive central midfield. Safe with the ball, experienced, intelligent and water-carrying defensive midfielders. Dani García has given the champions a very important presence in midfield where, through his physique and routine that cannot be bought, he has won the ball and given security to, for example, his young, skilled colleague Christos Mouzakitis. The Basque has not regretted his move from Athletic Club in Bilbao to Olympiakos for a day. Competitors for the place were in particular García's compatriot from Aris, Monchu.
Offensive Midfielder: Zini (Levadiakos)
Matches/Goals: 29/14
Comment: Loaned from AEK which has been successful both for Zini's own part but also for Levadiakos and in the long run perhaps also for AEK. In Levadiakos he has been given the trust and space to show himself which the 22-year-old Angolan national team player has done. Athletic, quick, technical and has gained more confidence in front of goal when it comes to finishing, [Video ]. A player with a high level and who has gathered many admirers. It remains to be seen how Zini himself and AEK think about his future.

Attacking Midfielder: Babis Kostoulas (Olympiakos)
Matches/Goals: 22/7
Comment: The super talent was moved up to the A-team last summer together with Christos Mouzakitis after their win of the UEFA Youth League last season. Both youngsters proved to be more than ready and are two own products of a rarely seen kind. Kostoulas can play basically everywhere in the attack. He has been mostly used in the attacking midfield and from there actively operated over controlled areas. Extremely influential in the game and has proven to be a very universal player. Dynamic with an incredible physique for only turning 18 soon. Missed the end of the season due to injury where he had to miss matches due to muscle problems which may have been caused by his playing style and the fact that it was the teenager's first senior season. Thus, Olympiakos was extra cautious with Kostoulas ahead of the summer because he is also extremely sought after on the transfer market and they have already rejected a bid of 35 million euros for him from the Premier League.
Striker: Loren Morón (Aris)
Matches/Goals: 30/18
Comment: Another very strong season from last year's top scorer in the Super League. Incredibly reliable striker/goal scorer. If Moron had represented one of the four big clubs, he would probably have also received more attention from the media and others in general. An estimate he would have deserved in full. In a measly two seasons, he has conquered the throne as the best foreign goalscorer of all time for Aris. That says a lot about his ability to find the net. 42% (18/42) of the team's goals in the league game came from the Spaniard. Technically very talented and can score goals in all ways and from all directions and edges.
