Greece vs Georgia: Match Preview

Image
Greece vs Georgia: Match Preview   By: Antonios Theodosis After an impressive result against group favorites Spain and a win over Honduras on the weekend in a friendly game, the Greek national team will be facing off against Georgia in the second World Cup Qualifier in less than twenty-four hours. I would just like to voice my thoughts and opinions on what I would like to see from coach John Van’t Schip.  The last couple of games have highlighted some interesting developments when it comes to certain areas in the squad such as the midfield and on the defensive end and I thought it would be nice to address some of these observations as well as quickly touch on what we should expect to see in tomorrow’s game.   In the lead-up to the match against Spain, I was slightly concerned to see that Left-Back Dimitris Giannoulis had sustained an injury and would not be able to play. Normally I would not have been too concerned with this news as thankfully Kostas Tsimikas is a player of the same ca

Olympiakos, Bringing the Boys Home!

O lympiakos, Bringing the Boys Home! By Steve Kountourou, As the international break draws everyone’s attention to their respective national sides, all of whom have begun the fight to reach the World Cup in 2022, there is always space to still talk about club football as it is a constant amongst fans during this supposed 'break'. That is certainly the case for me as this week I am going to blog about something a little different, still about Olympiakos though so don't worry nothing too different. A scout from the Thrylos camp recently came out and said that the club needed more Greek players as a core part of the squad, something a lot of supporters have cried out for in seasons gone by. Links to former Olympiakos players and a couple of former and current wonder kids have sprung up over the last few weeks, some have been brewing throughout this season, others come up every single transfer window. So I thought it would be fun to compile a top 5 list of Greek players who hav

Olympiakos European Season Review

Olympiakos European Season Review A Real Rollercoaster  By Steve Kountourou As Olympiakos bow out of European football once more, the focus now can fully return to the Greek Super League and Thrylos retaining the title as well as the potential for a second consecutive double by winning the Greek Cup. With that being said it is also a time of reflection and remembering some of the best moments from this season's European campaign. The Greek champions in both the Champions League and Europa League were far from perfect and at times looked a bit out of their depth for several different reasons. But one cannot deny the fight and never give up attitude fans of the Ethryolefki witnessed from beginning to end, that reasserted to people the love and passion they have for their club.  It was amazing to see their players stand toe to toe with teams with superior players on paper and budgets that dwarf the worth of Olympiakos tenfold. So for this week, I will be taking a look back at Thrylo

The Current State Of Football In The Greek Province Of Messinia

The Current State Of Football In The Greek Province Of Messinia By:Alexander Koutakos This week, we continue the trip around the provinces of Greece with the province of Messinia.  Messinia is located in the southwest corner of the Peloponnese. Messinia is also home to the cities/large towns of Kalamata, Messini, Filiatra and many others. In terms of football, the region has produced exceptional talents over the years, such as: Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Nikos Liberopoulos, Nikolaos Georgeas and many others.  The best team in the region is none other than Kalamata FC. In this article, I will be going over the current state of Kalamata FC, Apollon Kalamata, youth development in the region and the MFCA (Messinian Football Club Association). The Current State Of Kalamata FC Currently, Kalamata FC play in the “Football League”(the third tier of Greek football). Sadly, the    “Football League” has not been played this year due to the incompetence regarding the matter in-hand by Evangelos Gr

Super League Playouts: Who stays up? Who goes down?

Super League Playouts: Who stays up? Who goes down? By Michael Vissini The final stage of the 2020/2021 Super League has arrived as the league splits into two groups with the Top 6 fighting for European qualification in a 10 round playoff competition.  However, my latest blog focuses around the dog fight that has spiced up this season’s relegation battle with four of the eight teams battling to secure survival and avoid the drop. There is a slight difference compared to the six playoff teams, the Bottom 8 teams only face each other once in the playouts over 7 rounds to determine who will finish in last place and atomically drop down to the Super League 2.  13th place is the last hope, with the team facing against the runners-up of the Super League 2 in a two-legged playoff and try stay in the top flight of Greece. Bottom 8 Standings: Volos: 33 points You could argue Volos were unlucky this season not to qualify for Top 6 but that is ultimately impacted by the departure of the egomaniac

Arsenal vs Olympiakos, UEL Round of 16 Second Leg Preview

Arsenal vs Olympiakos,   UEL Round of 16 Second Leg Preview By Stephen Kountourou, I'm going to start this week by talking about mountain climbing, trust me it will make sense. To climb a large steep slope is a huge challenge for anyone and takes sheer grit, determination and a never give up attitude and once you reach the pinnacle of the Mountain you can look back and admire all the hard work you have gone through to get there. That is what Olympiakos face when the team travels to North London, where they will have the fight of their lives to turn the tie against an Arsenal side that is 1-3 up on aggregate and have three away goals.  This requires Thrylos to win away 0-3 to turn the tie on its head and not allow the Gunners to score in their own backyard. Is a turnaround possible? Well I will attempt to answer that question this week's the Europa League Round of 16 second leg preview, highlighting the first leg in Piraeus, how both teams performed in their respective domestic
