Football League - Under Way

Image
The Football League, Greece’s 2nd tier competition, has finally commenced after various delays and disputes concerning television, about who, how and where the competition would be broadcast. Here are the completed results from Round 1: Sparti 1-1 AOX Kissamikos Trikala 2-3 Doxa Drama Iraklis 1-0 Irodotos NFC Volos 7-0 Karaiskakis Platanias 2-1 Aittitos Panachaiki 2-2 Aiginiakos Ergotelis 2-0 Apollon Pontou Apollon Larissa 2-0 Kerkyra This year’s Championship will be a keenly fought one as it always is. But there is a little more added spice and intrigue going into this season. Only 1 club will be guaranteed promotion to the Super League for season 2019/2020, as we are right in the middle of a Federation, which is trying to re-organise and reconfigure the Greek Football pyramid. To the actual field of play and after Round 1, it appears the newly created club out of Volos, which is very well resourced, will be one of the teams to beat for promotion after their round 1 7-0 demolition

Panathinaikos means fighting spirit

After 7 rounds into the new Super League season, it is safe to say Giorgos Donis' 'babies' are the names on everyone's lips courtesy of a fantastic start that has featured swashbuckling attacking displays, an organised and committed defence, and many youngsters obtain their first opportunity at senior level. This has yielded an eye-catching 6 wins and 1 draw. However, the young Greens are yet to face any rival team or title challenger. All this time, many have been saying "tougher tests await". It starts in Matchday 8 in what will arguably be the most difficult game of the season at Toumba against PAOK. The Trifylli then meet rivals AEK and Olympiakos straight after. This is the true test the team has been waiting for. As the old cliché goes - "you can only beat what is in front of you" and the team has done just that. Hopefully it now gets taken to a new level in these next three games. If Panathinaikos can take points off the

An open letter to the Charlatan

Dear Michael, I am writing these words to you, which I know you will probably never read, to express some my feelings (I'm am sure shared by a lot of my fellow citizens) about our National Team. These words could be anything between fun and disgust, because following the WC 2014 dark age, very rarely has our beloved team suffered so many ridiculous "performances" than under your rule. Far be it from me to pretend to do like the perfidious Cicero trying to assassinate with his pen the Divine Mark-Antony in his Philippicae. But more than ever, in my humble level, I will never stop denouncing you. We can never forget the punishments, the humiliation, or the horrible horror shows you imposed us to. The last game against Finland was probably the climax, the quintessence of your incompetence. Under your rule, our beloved Ethniki don't deserve our support or encouragement but they don't need our boo’s or insults. Maybe just our silent anger, and disdain. By an hot

The date is April 22 nd 2018, AEK have just celebrated a 2-0 win over Levadiakos at OAKA. This is not an ordinary win, OAKA was packed with AEK fans that are ready to witness the club’s first league title since 1994. 24 years of drought, 24 years of pain and suffering, including one relegation to the 3 rd tier of Greek Football, 2 years spent away from the Greek Superleague, countless close calls and many painful losses, are about to end. AEK’s 2017-18 season was one of the best the club has had since 1994. They won the league, made it to the Europa League Round of 32 - while also remaining unbeaten for 10 European games - and a 3 rd consecutive Greek Cup final. Daniel Majstorovic The season had many heroes, but one in particular got almost no credit at all for the club’s success. Daniel Majstorovic, the club’s technical director had done wonders over the past year. In January of 2017 he signed cult hero Sergio Araujo on loan for 6 months and Ognjen Vranješ on a free transf

ARIS FC. In 2017/18 ARIS gained promotion into the Greek Super league for the first time since 2014. Since gaining promotion, club chairman Theodoros Karipidis has invested heavily in the club both on-field and off-field. Karapidis hit the ground running by signing a new manager in Francisco Herrera. Herrera, commonly known as Paco has a close working relationship with Real Madrid legend Raul Bravo, who is at ARIS in a more technical role. This relationship has no doubt influenced the side with an array of Spanish talent coming in and with Karipidis backing these two its fantastic to see it has worked a treat. In addition, Karipidis has invested off the field in the training ground, clubrooms & change rooms at the Kleanthis Vikelidis, which was way overdue so kudos to Theodoros. Six rounds into the campaign, ARIS couldn’t have started brighter, currently sitting in 5 th spot with 4 wins and 2 losses. ARIS lost their last game to Panionios away at Nea Smirni stadium, but
