Olympiakos: 2022/23 January Transfer Window Signings

By Stephen Kountourou

It's been another busy transfer window for Olympiakos. Unlike the summer full of signings it's a winter full of exits from the Greek champions. However, before we get to the long list of exits, this time around the focus will be on incoming reinforcements that could potentially help the Michels men going into a key part of the season.

Rodinei

Right-Back

31 Years Old

Free transfer from Flemego

The first signing for the Greek champions was agreed upon in late December just before the winter window opened in the form of Brazilian right-back Rodnei. The recently turned 31-year-old had never previously played outside of his native Brazil and so joining Olympiakos would be his first taste of European football.

With the deal being a free transfer and joining before he could be officially registered as part of Michels squad, Rodinei was able to acclimate to the club properly before he made his debut on the 3rd of January against Ionikos. Despite some naysayers questioning the player's ability before he had even kicked a ball for Olympiakos, Rodenei has had an impressive start to his time in Piraeus and quashed any doubts people had of him.

His ability to switch quickly from attack to track back in defence, overlapping, crossing and even shooting is exactly what Thrylos needs. It is still early days but he is already looking like Rodinei could be the Right back Olympiakos fans have been crying out for.

Ramon

Left-Back

21 Years Old

€1.50m from Flamengo

Another full-back, another Brazilian and another player from Flamengo. The talented young defender was signed by Olympiakos after a couple of other potential targets fell through for the Greek champions. That is not to say Ramon is not a good addition to the squad.

Even at his young age, he possesses all the abilities you would want from a modern fullback. Many are tipping him to be the eventual starter with Oleg Reabciuk seemingly close to a move away from Piraeus, Doron Leidner sent out on loan to Austria Vienna and Marcelo seemingly not favoured by Michel.

Much like his former Flemego compatriot Rodinei, this is Ramon’s first time playing in Europe. He also made his debut in a substitute appearance against OFI. So while he will need time to properly adapt it will certainly be exciting to see him when he is finally handed his full debut.

Sergi Canos

Right Midfielder

26 Years Old

Loan signing from Brentford

Seen as the marquee signing of the winter window for the Greek champions, there was a lot of excitement surrounding Sergi Canos arrival in Athens. While it seems at first to be a permanent deal, it eventually transpired that Brentford had loaned the Spanish winger with the intention of possibly renewing his expiring contract if he performs well in Piraeus.

Canos was a huge fan favourite for the West London club, having made 249 appearances. Up till this season, he was an integral side part of Thomas Frank's team due to his hard work on and off the ball and his ability to retake possession and drive forward with a burst of pace.

He also has exceptional physical and technical ability despite not being the shortest of players who can create as well as score, in short everything you want in a winger. While he has suffered a few injury setbacks in the last season or so if fully fit and firing he can be an internal part of Michels squad going into the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

Zymer Bytyqi

Left Midfielder

26 Years Old

€1 Million from Konyaspor

A surprise addition to the squad but one that was definitely needed to bolster the left midfield role. The Belgian-born Kosovan international joined on deadline day from Turkish side Konyaspor for €1 million.

An inverted winger with a good crossing ability, Bytyqi had a productive 2021/22 campaign, where he scored eight goals in 37 league games and while his numbers haven't been the same this season he looks to be another great pick-up for Olympiakos in a position they definitely needed to strengthen.
