The Women's Top Flight In Greece Has Just Commenced!

By Alexander Koutakos

As the title stated, the women's top flight in Greece just commenced its 2020-21 season. Yes, you read that right. A professional sports league in Greece commenced its 2020-21 season in April 2021! Things have certainly been tough for women’s football in Greece lately. Moreover, funding has been cut, delays are constant and things are generally running slowly. However, at the moment of writing, the 1st matchday of the season just occurred.

This season will be even more unpredictable due to the condensed schedules, smaller investment levels, weaker TV deals, a smaller amount of transfers and a higher amount of disorganization. This season of the women's top flight will actually be quite similar to the third division of men's football based on the fact that both of their respective season’s started around the same time. This article will go over the format of this season, the current standings and my predictions for this season.

The Format Of This Season

In total, there are 22 teams for this season. Those 22 teams are divided into two divisions based on geographical location. Due to that, there are the North and South divisions.

The North Division comprises of Argotikos Asteras EM WFC, Trikala 2011 WFC, Larissa WFC, Doxa Dramas WFC, PAOK WFC, Argotikos Asteras AV WFC, Giannina WFC, Elpides Karditsa WFC, Kastoria WFC and Vasilisa Thrakis WFC.

The South Division comprises of Odysseas Glyfadas WFC,  AEK Missolonghi 2008 WFC, Agia Paraskevi WFC, Avantes Chalkida WFC, Ergotelis WFC, Neos Asteras Rethymnou WFC, OFI WFC, Feidon WFC, Olympiada Ymittou WFC, Karyatides Spartis WFC and Atromitos WFC.

During the season, each team plays 20 games in the regular season.

Then, the top team in the North Division plays the top team in the South Division to determine the champion of the entire league.

After that, the second placed team in each division plays each other to determine the team that finishes third overall and lastly the team that finishes last in each division gets relegated to the second tier of women’s football in Greece.

The Current Standings

-The current standings in the North Division are as follows:

Argotikos Asteras EM WFC: 3 points,+5 goal differential

My Predictions For This Season

I will be predicting the teams that finish first, second and third and I will also be predicting the two teams that will be relegated to the second tier.

My first prediction is that PAOK WFC will win the league this season.

PAOK WFC has won the league the past six years in a row and it seems quite likely that they will win the league again.

Currently, PAOK WFC has the strongest squad, the best stadium and it generates the most revenue across the entire league. For second place, I predict that Odysseas Glyfadas WFC will finish second place. Odysseas Glyfadas WFC won their first game by six goals and they seem like the “giants” of the Southern Division. For third place, I predict that Larissa WFC will finish third.

Larissa WFC won their first game and they also played some attractive football. Hopefully, they can keep that up and finish in a high position on the ladder.

The two teams that I think will get relegated are Atromitos WFC and Vassilia Thrakis WFC.

Both of those teams started their season’s horribly and from my point of view they both do not have the caliber to compete at a high level in the top flight.

If you have any of your own predictions for this season, let me know!

If you want to watch this season unfold, the matches are on ERT and many matches are also on local Greek TV and Radio stations.
