PAS Giannina - Mid Season Review

PAS Giannina - Mid Season Review

By Antonios Theodosis

After a sizeable portion of matches played and with the winter break now here, it is time to assess the performance of PAS Giannina in the Greek Super League so far this season. As things stand currently with the winter break now underway, Giannina are currently sitting in tenth spot in Greece’s top flight after thirteen matches played. The Epirote club have conceded seventeen goals so far and scored fifteen goals leaving them with a goal differential of negative two.

Overall I would say that PAS Giannina are a team that are on par with where they are supposed to be as a mid table Greek side. It is important to keep in mind the criteria in which I am basing this review on as clearly the club does not have the lucrative transfer budgets of bigger clubs such as Olympiakos or PAOK. Giannina have made things work with the resources available to them however, and it is refreshing to see the club not resort to tactics that emphasize defense first.

Manager Argirios Giannikis has had PAS Giannina playing for wins so far this season which has been an admirable facet of this side thirteen games in. Giannikis has his side playing high up the pitch with constant pressure on opposition defenses looking quickly to pounce and score off of interceptions or misplaced passes, which explains why they have conceded quite a few goals so far. However, another positive aspect of this Giannina team is that they have also proven to be a dangerous side for opposition defenses when performing set pieces from corners and free kicks.

Their efforts so far this season have resulted in impressive results by getting a draw at home against league leaders Olympiakos along with a draw away to an impressive Aris side who currently sit in second place. They have lost to PAOK, AEK, and Panathinaikos in this first half of the season, but it is important to note that their performances against these bigger clubs have been good, only losing by one goal against PAOK and AEK and proving to give Panathinaikos a few scares at Leoforos.

With all of that said I would say that PAS Giannina’s first half of the season has been solid and that they deserve to remain in the Greek Super League after their promotion from the second division. My only area of concern is the amount of goals they have conceded thus far, but it comes with the territory of playing in a system that relies on coming at the opponent. This is a side that is not afraid of any opponent and I hope to see them continue this way going into 2021.
