Slovenia Vs Greece Ratings.
By Stephen Kountourou
Greece came into this game as favourites despite Slovenia’s World class goalkeeper Jan Oblak. A fairly even contest in terms of shots taken insued, with the Ethniki looking much the better team and the most likely to score.
They dominated both possession and passes going into halftime with the score still 0-0 and came out of the changing rooms flying trying to find an opener.
The second half was much the same at first, but eventually Slovenia shut up shop and had a couple chances of their own to win the match. Ultimately it finished 0-0, not ideal for the JVS men but not terrible.
With all that being said, here are my ratings for every Greek player that played in this Nations League tie against Slovenia. Feel free to comment below whether you agree or disagree.
GK Vasilios Barkas 8/10
Solid in goal, was only threatened properly once in the first half but other than that showed why he is in contention for Greece’s number one in goal.
RB Michalis Bakakis 7/10
While never going to be a stand out at anything in particular the AEK player does give Greece that reliable 7/10 performance every time which, while the Ethniki struggle for players at right back, and that's exactly what he did in this game and was good a switching up play from right to left with Giannoulis.
CB Stratos Svarnas 7/10
One of the more surprising additions in the squad, when there are players who many Ethniki fans felt should have been picked over him, Svarnas for the most part showed that he can step up to the plate when it comes to international football and looked comfortable at the back. Only got the better of late on but still did enough to stop Slovenia scoring late on.
CB Dimitris Siovas 8/10
The experienced half of the defence, the 6’4 foot giant gave that sense of reliability alongside Svarnas and shut down a lot of Slovenian attacks with his physical presence. Had a golden chance to put Greece ahead late on but his shot was easily saved by Oblak.
LB Dimitris Giannoulis 7/10
Depsite surprise that JVS started the PAOK defender over Kostas Tsimikas, Giannoulis I think justifyed his addition to the starting XI and much like his defensive counterparts was rarely threatened by the Slovenian attack.
CDM Zeca 5/10
The Copenhagen captain looked a little out of sorts in the match, as he seemed to lose the ball too easily in positions that the Slovenians could attack from. Very uncharacteristic performance in comparison to his previous games for Greece.
CDM Dimitris Kourbelis 6/10
Was much more reliable then Zeca but still when asked to attack the Panathinaikos player struggled to create anything meaningful on the break.
RM Dimitris Limnios 8/10
A lot of positive chances came down the right hand side and through the PAOK youngster and he was definitely positive going forward for Greece, ultimately however it wasn't enough to create a real goal scoring opportunity. Despite this probably one of the best players on the pitch.
CAM Anastasios Bakasetas 7/10
The attacking heart of Greece also had a decent showing and threatened the Slovenian defence along with his peers up top. He much like the rest of the Ethniki’s attack slowly ran out of ideas as their opponents dropped deeper and deeper, clearly looking for a draw.
LM Petros Mantalos 6/10
While primarily being deployed as a number 10 for AEK, Mantalos showed his versatility at left midfield and was still able to cut off the left. He struggled at times to create anything meaningful compared to his attacking team mate. He was eventually substituted in the 85th minute.
ST Vangelis Pavlidis 7/10
The striker plying his trade in Holland looked dangerous at times and in the first half was where he was at his most productive. He tailed away towards the end of the second half, coming off after 75 minutes.
Substitues
Taxiarchis Fountas 6/10
Greece’s most in form player for his club, came on with 15 minutes left but could not really bring any magic to a game that slowly but surely looked like it was going to be goalless at the final whistle.
Giorgios Masouras N/A
Came on with 5 minutes left but I don't think I can give him a rating he did not really impact the game enough.
