Ethniki Omada Squad Selection Analysis | Tzolis Finally Breaks Through, But So Do Tzavellas, Zeca and Four Goalkeepers

We have made it to the most pivotal international break in six and a half years for the Ethniki Omada, who aim to qualify for their first major tournament since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This is much different from 2018 however, as failure to qualify from this play-off would be an absolute catastrophe that would lead to the immediate firing of Gustavo Poyet, along with another generation of animosity within the organization. You just cannot lose to Kazakhstan/Georgia/Luxembourg. 

Now, let us look at the players who are set to take us to Euro 2024.

GK: Odysseas Vlachodimos (29 - Nottingham Forest)

While we are likely to see him start both matches, Vlachodimos has had a horrific start to his life in the Premier League. After transferring to Marinakis’ Nottingham Forest from Benfica  in September, Vlachodimos has played just five matches, allowing 12 goals, along with being completely removed from the rotation. He has not played a match in over three months.

GK: Alexandros Paschalakis (34 - Olympiakos)

For the first time in a few years, the starting goalkeeper is not a foregone conclusion. Again, while I doubt Poyet will remove Vlachodimos from the lineup altogether, especially since we never see him make any changes within even his selection, let alone the lineup, Paschalakis has made a case for the starting job. He has started nearly every single match this season for Olympiakos, and while he is prone to the occasional mistake, has played fairly well. Poyet has proven he does not care about form, but Paschalakis has given him something to think about.

GK: Sokratis Dioudis (31 - Zagłębie Lubin)

Dioudis has established himself as the number one option for Zagłębie Lubin, who currently sit mid-table in the Polish League. While he is not playing the highest quality matches, the Ekstraklasa is a respectable enough league, and he is starting consistently. He is a fine option for the third string goalkeeper.

GK: Giorgios Athanasiadis (30 - AEK)

In the 11 matches Athanasiadis has played this season, AEK have won one of them. He was in goal for AEK in the Cup Round of 16 when they exited to Aris on penalties, failing to save a single one. In the five Super League matches he has started, AEK drew to Panserraikos twice, Panetolikos, and Kifisia. Pretty good resume for Athanasiadis, right? Now you may ask, why do I care so much about the 4th string goalkeeper? Because there is no logical reason for having a 4th string goalkeeper. As you will soon see, this team has one player who can play left back on the entire roster! What could possibly be the rationale behind bringing four goalkeepers for two matches within the same week? We are coached by an absolute madman.

CB: Konstantinos Mavropanos (26 - West Ham)

After spending the first few months in London on the bench, Mavropanos has become a regular in West Ham’s starting 11. Though it has definitely been a bumpy road, he remains the best Greek defender without question. We will need him to be at his best if we are to qualify.

CB: Pantelis Hatzidiakos (27 - Cagliari)

Another defender who transferred clubs over the summer, Hatzidiakos has not had the best start to his life in Italy. While starting his season with what seemed to be consistent starting opportunities, he has been slowly pushed out of the regular rotation, along with missing a month of action due to injury. He has played only 45 minutes since January 2. However, the Mavropanos - Hatzidiakos partnership has been a staple within the Ethniki for a long time now, and while it has not brought us much success, there is no way Poyet will change it now.

CB: Konstantinos Koulierakis (20 - PAOK)

In a perfect world, Koulierakis is replacing Hatzidiakos in the starting 11. He has been the best defender at PAOK for two seasons now, and plays with the maturity of someone who is 30, not 20. We will definitely be seeing him in future lineups, but again, I can not imagine Poyet makes such a change for this game. 

CB: Panagiotis Retsos (25 - Olympiakos)

I for one am happy that Retsos has been able to revive his career at Olympiakos. While he looked like a superstar in the making in the first years of his career, consistent, long-term injuries really set him back, and I could have easily seen him playing in the Super League 2 by now with the fall he has had. However, Olympiakos gave him another shot, and he has taken it. He has become a regular in their starting 11, as he continues to restart his career back at his home club.

CB: Georgios Tzavellas (36 - Atromitos)

Well, well, well, what do we have here? Now, you may think Tzavellas retired from the international game last year. Do you know why you think that? Because it happened. Nope! You were wrong! We were all wrong! Tzavellas will never leave this team. He will haunt you until 2050, when Greece will still not have qualified for a major tournament.

LB: Konstantinos Tsimikas (27 - Liverpool)

After Liverpool’s starting left back Andrew Robertson went down with a long-term injury, it looked like Tsimikas would finally get his chance at a consistent starting role. He was playing quite well too, right before he himself suffered a broken collarbone. It seemed certain at the time that he would be physically ready by the international break, but he has returned to Liverpool’s squad, and done enough to be selected by Poyet again. As he is the only left back on the roster, with Giannoulis going down to injury, we will need a lot from Tsimikas in these two matches.

RB: George Baldock (31 - Sheffield United)

While Sheffield have had a horrific season in the premier league, as they are sure to be relegated in the coming months, no one can say Baldock is to blame. While not having a particularly special season, Baldock is still easily the best right back on this team, and I sincerely hope he is in the starting 11 next week.

RB: Lazaros Rota (26 - AEK)

I do not think Rota has ever put in one good shift for this team. He is a fine player for AEK, and plays fairly regularly, but I can’t imagine why Poyet continues to call him up just based on what he has seen with him in his own matches. The only reason to be upset at what we perceive is a backup right back is because you know Poyet does not see him as a backup, and I do not know why. I think Baldock will play both games, but you never know when he has the choice of picking Rota, who is seemingly in every single match we play.

RB: Manolis Saliakas (27 - St. Pauli)

I am surprised we didn’t see Kotsiras in this spot, or more so an actual left back, but I am fine with Saliakas as a selection. Our bar is so low for the squad, that we will take anyone who plays consistent minutes for their club, even if they don’t play at the highest level. Saliakas has played all but one match for St. Pauli this season, who are in a prime position to be promoted to the Bundesliga. I would take Saliakas over Rota anyday.

CM: Manolis Siopis (29 - Cardiff City)

One of the most beloved players for both his club and country, Siopis has had an excellent season in the English championship with Cardiff. If there is one player you know is going to bring his best in Ethniki matches, it is Siopis. Where he often falls short however is his midfield partner, as constantly finds it impossible to pair him with another player. 

CM: Anastasios Bakasetas (30 - Panathinaikos)

While it feels strange for me listing him as a center-mid, as Bakasetas has almost always filled an attacking role for us in the past, I think his talent is far better suited as a #8 rather than a #10. In addition to that, I think we would be much better off having some of the more creative players fill that position, but I doubt we will see changes like that in these matches.

CM: Dimitris Kourbelis (30 - Fatih Karagümrük)

Luckily for us, Kourbelis has gotten four straight starts in Turkey, setting him up quite nicely for this playoff. He has missed most of this season due to injury, and he doesn’t play for a particularly good club. Kourbelis simply is not the same player that he was when he was at Panathinaikos, but he is far better than some of the other selections.

CM: Andreas Bouchalakis (30 - Hertha BSC)

Boucahalakis just finds a way to get on this team. Would I much prefer giving this spot to some of the younger talent? Yes I would. Especially since we have given this guy 42 caps to absolutely no avail. I can’t say I am shocked with the selection however, as he has been playing consistent minutes this year, but I also can’t say I am happy to see his name again. It’s a name that I associate with the last ten years of the Ethniki, which is not what you want to be.

CM: Zeca (35 - Panathinaikos)

I could have sworn Zeca retired from this team along with Tzavellas last year, but here he is again. As bad as this selection is, at least he has gotten into a few matches with PAO this year. What can I even say? Zeca was a fine player five years ago, but we are supposed to pretend he is some kind of legend because he is old. And you know when Poyet calls up a guy like Zeca, he will be featured at some point in our biggest matches in years.

CAM: Giannis Konstantelias (21 - PAOK)

Finally, we get to talk about the best player on the team. While Konstantelias has not had much of a chance to play in a big moment for his country, we can be sure he will deliver if given the opportunity. This is a player not afraid of the moment, and one that does not need to score to contribute. Just give him the ball, back away, and let him create. He is what this team has been missing for years, and we can only hope Poyet gives him a shot.

CAM: Petros Mantalos (32 - AEK)

Everything I said about Bouchalakis and Zeca can be said about Mantalos. He gets called up for the sole reason that he has been consistently called up for a long time. Why? I have no idea. Clearly it hasn’t been working, as none of these players have ever played in a major tournament. Mantalos is probably the best of those three that I just mentioned, and it’s no surprise he is getting called up, but it just represents a team that has failed time and time again. Mantalos has put together a fairly decent season for AEK however, and will definitely be featured in these matches in some capacity.

CAM: Dimitrios Pelkas (30 - Basaksehir)

Pelkas is another player who is regularly selected, even though he has not shown quality for his club or country in quite a few years. He has not played a match for his club in three months, but will probably appear for the Ethniki. He has also not performed well for the Ethniki in his last few appearances. Someone explain this logic to me.

Winger: Georgios Masouras (30 - Olympiakos)

While he has taken his share of criticism for his Ethniki performances in the past, he is without a doubt one of our better attacking players. When he is in good form, Masouras is one of the few players that actually score for this team. He has played nearly every match this season for Olympiakos, and will be one of the key factors to our success.

Winger: Christos Tzolis (Fortuna Dusseldorf)

In what is easily the most important selection yet, Poyet finally decided to go against his instincts and select Christos Tzolis, who has been absolutely dismantling the German second division. He has scored 16 goals in addition to six assists in 26 matches for Fortuna Dusseldorf this season. It is a selection long overdue, and Tzolis will hopefully be given the opportunity to make a huge impact in what will be the biggest matches of his career.

Winger: Anastasios Chatzigovanis (26 - Ankaragucu)

This selection never ceases to amaze me. Chatzigiovanis has quietly become a staple in the squad, yet I do not think he has ever done anything. Ever. In his 24 appearances in Turkey this season, he has zero goals and one assist for Ankaragucu. While you might not think that is good, Poyet thinks it is great. I can’t imagine we see much of Chatzigovanis in these matches.

ST: Vangelis Pavlidis (25 - AZ Alkmaar) 

Pavlidis has become the highest valued Greek player in history, according to Transfermarkt, passing Tsimikas this past winter. He has scored 26 goals in all competitions this year, is in a neck and neck race for the Eredivisie Golden Boot, and has been linked to a premier league move in the summer. In spite of all of that, he has yet to make a dramatic impact for the Ethniki, collecting a disappointing 6 goals in 36 appearances. When you know how much talent is there however, it is hard to complain.

ST: Georgios Giakoumakis (29 - Atlanta United)

It is a good thing that the MLS season kicked off before this playoff, otherwise Giakoumakis would not have played a match for quite a long time. In his second match of the season, Giakoumakis picked up a hat trick along with an assist to carry Atlanta to a victory. Although he is the second option to Pavlidis, there is a good chance we at least see him come on as a substitute.

ST: Fotis Ioannidis (24 - Panathinaikos)

The breakout season has finally come for Ioannidis, and he has not disappointed. He has scored 20 goals and added seven assists in 36 matches for Panathinaikos this season, and has helped keep them in the mix for what would be their first league title in 14 years. Ioannidis has tough competition ahead of him, as striker is the one position where the Ethniki is strong, but he is a solid option to have now and in the future.

Is this squad good enough to advance through this playoff? Of course it is. I don’t think any Greek squad should fail to qualify over Kazakhstan, Georgia, and Luxembourg. Where my fear lies however is Gustavo Poyet and how he selects the starting 11. If we see players like Tzolis and Konstantelias selected, we are sure to advance. However, if we are staring at a lineup of Pelkas and Mantalos, we may get by Kazakhstan at home, but we will have to fight a war in Tbilisi to get by Georgia.

Will calling up Zeca, Tzavellas, Pelkas, Bouchalakis, and four goalkeepers eventually catch up to Poyet? Or will it be enough?
