Weve seen this story before for the last decade. Today it hurt more than the rest.

Take nothing away from Georgia. They did a job that was required of them, and they will be heading to Germany whilst we will lament another failed campaign where we have likely seen the end of Gus Poyet's reign as the Ethniki Coach. 

Depending on where you are, as we cry into our morning coffee, eat our lunch in anger or try go to sleep. the same question will ring through into our heads.

What happened? And who is to blame? 

The coach? His pragmatic approach to games was evident. He may as well have written his tactics on an email and sent them to every coach we played against because nothing ever changed with him. Whilst it got us favourable results it also allowed the opposition to know what we were doing and generally who was going to be subbed on and where. 

He had his favourites. all coaches do. Unfortunately, his favourites have only been part of multiple failed campaigns, whilst some of his favourites aren't even automatic starters for their clubs.

All this whilst we see talented individuals playing well for their respective club either miss out or retire prematurely from internation duty. 

He put some steel in the side, but that was it. Tactically we looked inept and devoid of any ideas when things did not go our way. Today's match was a perfect example of us being out coached and out enthused. 

But... Was his job remit from the start to just focus on the here and now? To qualify for a major tournament and not look past that. I can only think that if he wasn't told that by EPO, that's the mentality he had. 

The players? Is it being unreasonable to think that today should be the last time we will ever see a host of players play for the Ethniki Omada again? We have a host of players who have racked up impressive amounts of matches for the national side and have nothing to show for it other than individual pride. yes, they didn't go out to fail, no one does but they just weren't good enough when it counted... I don't need to name names, everyone knows, so I think it's time to rip off that band aid and either they retire on their own free will or they are pushed by the higher up to call it a day. 

Is it unreasonable to think that we can build something positive with the younger talent at our disposal? I'm not saying build a side exclusively with 20, 21 and 22 year olds but surely, we need to find a way to have the likes of Tzolis, Konstantelias and Pavlidis to name a few start. 

I sound like a broken record but if the fans can see it, then either the leaders of EPO need to act, or they need to start explaining why they think they are the right people to run football in our country.

As a proud nation, ten years with no major tournament is unacceptable. 

The time is now. and they should act with swiftness to show the fans that what happened is not going to be tolerated. 

We wait in anticipation.

    Arguably, Poyet's bigger failure was with advancing directly through the qualifying group, specifically the two games against the Dutch. Poor tactics and selections in both games, against a less than full Dutch squad, who were there for the taking in both games. The second game against the Dutch was the most aggregious. Freezing the game for 80 minutes or so and then throwing caution to the wind the last 10 minutes or so, with four strikers and no link up with competent attacking mids, was just amateurish and laughable with Poyet. Living in his fears and seemingly lost with his adjustments to course correct during games, he should be let go

A Knee away from the 1998 World Cup By Greg Gavalas Coming of what would have been for the Ethniki in World Cup Qualifications, Mexico 70 was close with a very good team, and as mentioned in that part, until 1994, Greece had seldom even got close to World Cup Qualification however the next opportunity to reach the grandest stage would happen in just the next campaign which was for the 1998 World Cup to be held in France.
