One transfer for every Greek Super League Club 2024/25

 One transfer for every
Greek Super League club 2024/25

By Stephen Kountourou

The Greek transfer window has slammed shut and it has certainly been an eventful summer for the top flight. According to FIFA, Super League clubs spent a record-breaking €46.39 million in the summer of 2024.

In some ways, this big money expenditure shows that the years of careful spending and lack of funds due to a seemingly ever-looming national financial crisis is well and truly over. With all that being said here is one player from each club that, in my opinion, will make the most impact for each Greek side this season.

AEK - Erik Lamela

Right Winger

32 years old

Argentinian

Signed from Sevilla on a free transfer

What better way to start than with one of the biggest summer transfers (which also helps that AEK comes first alphabetically) The former Europa League winner, who signed on a free transfer after his contract with Sevilla expired, had an injury-prone campaign last season, managing 19 appearances in all competitions in 2023/24.

Although this has been the story of Lamela's career, he can have moments of brilliance. He could become a talismanic figure for Enosis in their bid to challenge for the title this season.

Aris - Monchu

Centre Midfielder

24 years old

Spanish

Signed from Real Valladolid for €3.60 million

A bit of an underrated signing by the Thessaloniki side, Monchu joined this summer for a record fee from Laliga side Real Valladolid. The Spanish midfielder had an excellent campaign in the second tier, playing in every match, scoring six and assisting three. Valladolid was promoted back to the top flight as runners-up.

After an impressive 2023/24 season, Aris hopes Monchu can replicate that form in their bid to try and disrupt the big four in Greece.

Asteras Tripolis - Martin Ádám

Striker

29 years old

Hungarian

Signed from Ulsan HD on a free transfer

It couldn’t be any other transfer from the Arcadians. Asteras Tripolis brought in striker Martin Ádám on a free transfer. The most fascinating thing about Hungarian International’s acquisition is that it is a very off-brand transfer from Asteras, with their strategy normally focusing on wiry Spanish and Argentine players. Ádám, however, is a 6 ft 3, man mountain nicknamed “the Hungarian Viking” during Euro 2024.

The 32-year-old had a decent time in the K League, winning two league titles with the South Korean side. Ádám gives Asteras something different, from what is customary to their style of play, and will be a real dangerman in setpieces for the Arcadians this campaign.

Athens Kallithea - Mathieu Valbuena

Attacking Midfielder

39 years old

French

Signed from Apollon Limassol on a free transfer

Maybe it is the easy option to pick a player with such a long successful career, who is now in the twilight of his time as a player. But Mathieu Valbuena justifies his entry into this list, if not for the simple reason that it is still a big surprise to see the Frenchman at a newly promoted side like Kallithea.

The former Marseille, Lyon, Fenerbahce and Olympiakos player, joined the Athenian club after a stint in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol. Age was only a number for the former French international as he made 36 appearances in all competitions for Apollon, while also scoring eight and assisting five times. Once he recovers from his injury, Valbuena could very well still be the difference maker in a side that will hope to stay up in the Super League this season.

Atromitos - Carlitos

Striker

34 years old

Spanish

Signed on a free transfer

One brilliant spell in Lamia followed by a six-week stint in Kazakhstan. That was what led Carlitos back to Greece where he has now joined Atromitos on a free transfer. The Spanish striker, as said, had an excellent campaign with Lamia in the Super League. Ten goals and four assists in 22 appearances helped Lamia to an unlikely playoff spot after the regular season.

Then astonishingly, rather than helping Lamia in the playoffs, Carlitos received a huge offer to join Kazakhstani side Astana. The 34-year-old only managed three appearances before leaving just six weeks into his contract. Now he is back in Greece with the Peristeri side, his experience and knack for goals could help Atromitos to a top-half finish.

Lamia - Gustavo Furtado

Left Winger

23 years old

Brazilian

Signed from Panathinaikos on a free transfer

A player that Panathinaikos supporters may remember from their B team ranks last season, Gustavo Furtado joined Lamia on a free transfer. The Brazilian winger had a solid campaign in Super League 2, scoring seven times in 27 appearances.

It can certainly be said that Furtado has already made an impactful start to life in the Greek top flight, scoring his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against AEK, with his side narrowly missing out on all three points in Agia Sophia. Lamia will be encouraged by the 23-year-olds early performances and will hope he can replicate his second-division form last season for them.

Levadiakos - Rodrigo Erramuspe

Centre-Back

34 years old

Argentinian

Signed from PAS Giannina on a free transfer

Newly promoted Levadiakos' main goal this season above all else is to beat the drop, which goes without saying. The signing of defender Rodrigo Erramuspe is a good step forward. The Argentine has Super League experience after a four-year stint with PAS Giannina.

He made 115 appearances for PAS and helped them stay up for three of those four seasons and finish an impressive 6th place in 2021/22 where they also reached the playoffs. Having amassed a solid goal tally for a centre-back, with 21 in his time in Giannina, Levadiakos will hope that Erramuspe’s previous success in Greece can keep them in the first division.

OFI - Taxiarchis Fountas

Second Striker

28 years old

Greek

Signed from Trabzonspor on a free transfer

An absolute Cretan coup, Taxiarchis Fountas returned to Greece, but surprised many by joining OFI on a free transfer. This signing has the potential to take the Cretans to the next level and compete for a European place, such is the quality of the Greek international, who is the kind of Xfactor player that OFI have perhaps lacked in the past.

The 28-year-old, had a mixed time last season at Trabzonspor, scoring six times and assisting twice in all competitions. Fountas is in his peak, he still has the potential to replicate the kind of performances he displayed in Austria with Rapid Vienna and that is why this move was an absolute no-brainer for OFI.

Qualifying for the 5th-8th place playoffs and competing for that last European place will be their aim, and having Fountas makes that a genuine possibility.

Olympiakos - David Carmo

Centre-Back

25 years old

Angolan

Signed from Nottingham Forest on loan

A transfer saga which rattled on, off and on again throughout the summer, David Carmo finally returned to Olympiakos, but not quite in the way their fans expected. The Angolan defender was bought by Evangelos Marinakis's other club Nottingham Forest for €15 million before going back to the Piraeus side for a second loan stint.

Upon his arrival during his loan from former club FC Porto, Carmo was transformative for Thrylos in defence with a historic European run that culminated in Olympiakos winning the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Even with the 25-year-old only rejoining on loan, Carmo is an excellent signing for Olympiakos this season in their bid to return the Greek Super League title to Piraeus and compete in the Europa League League Phase.

Panathinaikos - Tetê

Right Winger

24 years old

Brazilian

Signed from Galatasaray for €7.25 million

Becoming the third-largest transfer fee in Panathinaikos' history, the Prasini showed their intent in this summer window by signing Brazilian winger Tetê for €7.25m from Galatasaray.

Most famed for his time in Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk, the Brazillian winger didn’t have the best of times in Turkey, only three and assisting six in 45 appearances throughout all competitions. Tetê has started well in Athens by scoring three times at this early stage of the season.

His most important goal to date, came in the UEFA Conference League playoffs against French side Lens to help his side qualify for the League Phase. With a few other big-money signings this summer, Panathinaikos will hope their investments lead to a first league title in 15 years and a potential run in Europe.

Panetolikos - Epaminondas Pantelakis

Centre-Back

29 years old

Greek

Signed from PAS Ginnina on a free transfer

It was close among a couple of new arrivals for Panetolikos, including Christos Shelis and Miguel Luís. But Epaminondas Pantelakis just about takes it. The Greek defender joined the Agrinio side from relegated PAS Ginnina.

From 2019-2024 and 133 appearances in all competitions, Pantelakis not only helped PAS gain promotion to the Super League but also stayed up for three seasons and reached the playoffs in 2021/22, before they were finally relegated last season.

After narrowly surviving the drop themselves in the previous campaign, the Canaries have an important and experienced leader in Pantelakis to solidify their defence.

Panserraikos - Mohamed Fares

Left-Back

28 years old

Algerian

Signed from Lazio on loan with an option to buy

After impressing many by staying up in the Super League last season Panserraikos will want to build on their success, which is where the signing of Mohamed Fares on loan from Italian side Lazio with an option to buy comes in. The Algerian has had a tough time with injuries in recent years, only making 16 appearances last year for Serie B side Brescia on loan.

Even with these persistent issues, it is still a signing that upgrades the left side of defence for the Serres club who will do their utmost not to have a hangover season and stay in the top flight once more.

PAOK - Fyodor Chalov

Striker

26 years old

Russian

Signed from CSKA Moscow for €3 million

The biggest fee paid by the Greek champions for a player this summer PAOK, brought in striker Fyodor Chalov as their main man up front. The 26-year-old, who is a bit more of a diminutive forward, standing at 5 ft 11, previously played in his native Russia for CSKA Moscow.

Chalov finished last season as the club's leading goalscorer in all competitions with 16 in total. PAOK have a demanding season ahead of them in their bid to keep their Super League crown while also having the Europa League to contend with. This means the Russian striker will be expected to replicate his form at his previous club, in Thessaloniki.

Volos - Franco Ferrari

Left-Back

32 years old

Argentinian

Signed from Aris on a free transfer

The final signing on this list and it's a player returning to a former club. Left-back Franco Ferrari rejoined Volos after two seasons away. During his first stint at the club, the Argentine made 100 appearances in all competitions. He arrived the season after promotion to the Super League and helped solidify Volos as a first-tier side over the next three seasons.

After stints in Cyprus with APOEL and a stop in Thessaloniki with Aris, Ferrari is back with Volos, with expectation for the club to improve on their subpar 2023/24 season and push for the 5th-8th place playoffs.
