Lasha Shergelashvili previews Georgia vs Greece

By Nikolas Fil

With Georgia and Greece setting to face each other on Tuesday for a place in this summer’s Euro in Germany, the former Pas Giannina midfielder Lasha Shergelashvili previews the big game as well as speaking about the differences between football in Greece and in Georgia.

What are the main differences between Georgian and Greek football?

“Georgian and Greek football, while both part of the broader European football landscape, have some distinct differences in terms of their history, structure, and characteristics. Greek football has a longer history, more established league structure, and greater success on both the club and international levels compared.

The most important part of Georgian football lies in its role as a catalyst for national pride, community engagement, talent development, and the professionalisation of the sport within the country. While Georgian football may face challenges and may not enjoy the same level of success as some other nations, its significance lies in its contributions to the fabric of Georgian society and culture.”

Except Kvaratskhelia, who else do you think is the most important player for this Georgian team and who do you think Greece must be most prepared for?

“Some Georgian football players, like Mikautadze and Mamardashvili and are playing for a top 5 (league) European teams so it will be interesting game.”

Who is the player in Greece's squad you think Georgia should be prepared for?

“Greek football and football players play a significant role in promoting physical health, skill development, unity, economic growth, social cohesion, inspiration, international recognition, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange within Greece and beyond. So I think that the whole Greek team is an honourable opponent for us.”

Finally give us your prediction this big game

“It’s historical match for Georgians so hope it will be our first chance to play for European Cup.”
