Official: Fatih Terim takes over at Panathinaikos
Panathinaikos has made a surprising change of coach to say the least. The greens from the capital decided to get rid of the popular Ivan Jovanovic after 2.5 years of faithful service to the club. His replacement is the experienced Turkish coach Fatih Terim.
The news struck like a bolt from the blue. During Monday morning (26/12), Turkish rumors appeared on social media regarding Fatih Terim taking over at Panathinaikos.
Only a couple of hours later, the rumors were confirmed from several sources, including by Terim himself. In the evening, the announcement was made. The experienced Turkish coach has signed an agreement with Panathinaikos which, according to information, extends over the next 1.5 years. Among other things, he is known for all his stays in Galatasaray, with which he won many titles.
The greens from the capital thus took the controversial decision to get rid of coach Ivan Jovanovic. The Serb is allowed to leave after 2.5 years of faithful and good service.
He is the reason why the fans got hope again and, by and large, the main reason why the whole club was resurrected. During Jovanovic's time at the club, he has gradually built a team to be reckoned with.
In the first season of 2021-22, he led the team to the cup title. In the 2022-23 season, Panathinaikos fought for the league title until the final sprint and this season he came close to leading them to the Champions League but it ended in the Europa League group stage.
The last time Panathianikos participated in a European group stage was in 2016-17.
During the late autumn, the team has had a heavier period sportingly, but according to the undersigned and the vast majority, this definitely does not justify a firing of the popular Jovanovic.
The decision has caused great anger among the club's supporters against owner Giannis Alafouzos. Instead of a coaching change, the team rather needed a little rest, analysis and one or two qualitative new acquisitions before the second half of the season. That both parties are separated in this way is also a moral disgrace.
70-year-old Terim will arrive in Athens tomorrow, Wednesday (27/12) and, if all goes according to plan, will do his first training with the team later that afternoon. With him to Athens, he will, among other things, have Necati Ates, who was previously Terim's assistant coach. Mart Cetin and Sükrü Hanedar will also be part of the new coaching team.
Terim will make his debut in charge of the second-placed team when the league restarts on Wednesday, January 3 where Panathinaikos will face PAS Giannina that evening at home at Leoforos.
It is noteworthy that nowadays both Panathinaikos' football section and basketball section have Turkish coaches because Ergin Ataman is the head coach of the basketball team.
