Panathinaikos End Of Season Player Ratings
Panathinaikos season review; Rating every player on the roster
Reminder; These ratings are opinion based and subjective. They are based on the author’s observations and opinions of the squad.
Sokratis Dioudis - 7.5/10
Became the first choice goalkeeper and did not disappoint. He found career best form and pulled off an array of inspired saves that single-handedly earnt the Greens points. Also commanded his area well. Put his body on the line when needed
as evidenced by his nasty injury in the away derby against Olympiakos.
Ousmane Coulibaly - 4.5/10
Largely inconsistent as he faded at the back end of the season. Notched a couple of assists in the first half of the season off his crosses but poor form and injuries made it a season to forget in what will be his last at the club.
Mattias Johansson - 6.5/10
One of the most improved players in the side compared to last season. Became the first choice right back after illustrating his skill in the final third contributing with his share of goals and assists.
Dimitris Kolovetsios - 7/10
Became the dominant centre half and one of the first names on the team sheet. Still prone to rash challenges and inconsistent efforts, he sorely lacked a stable partner at the heart of defence. Signed a well deserved new contract and
broke into the Ethniki squad.
Fanis Mavromatis - 6/10
A relatively solid first season at men's level. Showed he is not scared of the big occasion despite his inexperience. Made a few mistakes as expected but will get better. All this playing time will do him the world of good.
Achilleas Poungouras - 5.5/10
Struggled to break into the first team but was reliable depth-wise. Often deployed when switching to a back three in the middle third of the season. Needs to be better next season.
Vangelis Oikonomou - 3/10
Severely underwhelmed as he failed to gain the coach's trust. His experience failed to make a mark and as a result, will depart the club.
Emanuel Insua - 8/10
Improved on last season and is now a key member of the squad moving forward. Donis did well to keep him in the summer amid interest from Spain. Nicknamed "The Bison" due to his non-stop energy and ability to burst up and down the left side,
he chipped in with 2 outstanding goals - a one-two and a curling, looping effort.
Ilias Chatzitheodoridis - 6/10
Demonstrated why Dabizas pursued him intently. Acquitted himself very well in his first taste of men's football and is very much a modern-day fullback with pace and a good crossing ability. Can also play higher up the pitch and will
get better.
Dimitris Kourbelis - 8/10
The pillar of strength, captain, leader and talisman was at his usual high standards as he enters the prime of his career. Donis opted to solely play him as a defensive midfielder which is his best position. Shields the back line and can
pick a great pass from deep to start attacks. Rightfully broke into the starting side for the Ethniki and has yet again attracted overseas interest.
Ergys Kace - 5.5/10
Scored a lovely volley against Olympiakos in the away derby, in what was one of the goals of the season. However, other than that, it was slim pickings as he struggled for form even though he remained first choice for a large chunk of the season.
Showed he is uncomfortable with set pieces and return to PAOK now that his loan spell has ended.
Christos Donis - 6/10
He was always going to be under the spotlight playing under his father and he delivered what was expected of him. A player with a limited skill set but a big heart and hunger to win, he emerged as a key player in the squad when times were tough.
A sad reality of where the club is at.
Fanis Tzandaris - 3.5/10
Never able to gain Donis' trust and barely featured in a problem position for the Trifylli. Has the quality to succeed but it looks like his time at the club is up.
Giannis Bouzoukis - 8/10
Just edges Kourbelis and Insua as the club's player of the season. A year ago he was practically an unknown, but now his stocks are rapidly rising and will be a man in demand. Started the season brilliantly with a thumping winning strike
at Xanthi and backed it up against Lamia. Played a starring role in the Greens' early season form. It is best for his development to remain in green.
Omri Altman - 4.5/10
Only played in the second half of the season due to a horrible injury suffered last season. Scored his only goal against Asteras Tripolis, latching onto a great ball from Kourbelis. It remains to be seen whether he is in Donis' long-term plans.
Anthony Mounier - 3/10
A stop-start season for the French veteran. The talent is still there but only in flashes. Injury has all but ended his career. Could not replicate last season's form and appears to be heading for the exit.
Tasos Chatzigiovannis - 7.5/10
His best season to date and will get better. The debutantes could look to the winger as an example. Now a regular fixture in the side, he can be the future of the club for the medium to long-term. His form replicated the team's ladder
position. Enjoyed a blistering start and one of the players of the season, courtesy of his creativity, pace, confidence, direct running and shooting ability, but fell away as the season progressed.
Federico Macheda - 7.5/10
The Italian forward was the only foreigner over 23 the club could sign and therefore, carried a large burden of expectation. He delivered with an impressive 11 goals in all competitions and appears to have somewhat resurrected his career
in Athens. Started very well and endured a dry patch through the middle. Without his goals the Trifylli would have been in significant trouble. Next season shapes as an interesting one as Donis will look to lure an out and out scorer to enable Macheda to bring
his teammates into the game.
Argiris Kampetsis - 5/10
Started brightly but fell away quickly. Despite the poor return in terms of goals, there are still big wraps on the talented youngster and this sustained run in and around the first team in his teenage years will do him the world of good.
Dimitris Emmanouilidis - 5.5/10
Became the first ever player born in the 21st century to score a goal in the Greek Super League in the early rounds of the season in the home win over Lamia. Suffered his share of setbacks as Donis dropped him for poor behaviour during
the middle of the season - issues at training and his reaction after being substituted at PAS Giannina. However, by the end of the season he was back in the side.
Nikos Vergos - 2/10
One of the biggest disappointments of the season. Could not break into the starting side and even struggled in the Greek Cup. His career is at a crossroads after he has blown this opportunity to succeed with a fresh start.
Average Player Rating 5.7.10
Donis used a whopping 29 players this season, however, many received their debuts and played a limited role. Panos Armenakas, Paschalis Staikos, Mark Sifenos, Vangelis Theocharis, Konstantinos Kotsaris, Epaminondas Pantelakis, Christos Sechou, Andreas Athanasakopoulos
and Kostas Apostolakis were all fringe players. For many, it was a step in the right direction as they were able to play at a senior level despite their tender age.
