Football League Half Way Point

FOOTBALL LEAGUE HALF-WAY POINT

The Football League is always a competition to keep an eye on and in this season, there is plenty of interest. The current 2018/19 Football League season is magnified, as the restructure of the Greek League system is under way and it will affect numerous clubs currently competing in the Football League.

Firstly, the Football League from 2019/20 onwards will be re-branded and known as “Super League 2”. Reduced from 18 teams in 2017/18 to 16 teams for this season, it will further be reduced for the 2019/20 season, to at this stage 12 teams.

Given that many things in Greek Football and in Greece generally are always subject to change, it is difficult to pin any one issue down and be certain of the outcomes. But my understanding on how Promotion/Relegation will operate inthis current 2018/19 season’s Football League is like this:

1st will be promoted to the Super League for 2019/20.
2nd will play the team that finishes 13th in this season’s Super League, in a playoff for promotion to the Super League for 2019/20, the loser of this playoff, heads to the new Super League 2 for 2019/20.
- Teams finishing 3rd through 10th in this season’s Football League, will remain and compete in the new Super League 2 for season 2019/20.
- Teams finishing 11th and 12th in this season’s Football League, will be relegated to Gamma Ethniki or whatever re-branding the Greek 3rd tier receives, at this stage the 3rd tier from 2019/20 onwards will be knows as the Football League, do you all follow?
- Teams that finish in the bottom 4 this season (13th to 16th), will drop 2 divisions and be relegated to Delta Ethniki, or whatever re-branding the Greek 4th tier receives.

At the half-way point of the 2018/19 Football League, the newly formed and heavily financially backed Volos NFC, has a commanding lead and looks certain to be promoted to the Super League for 2019/20.

2nd spot however will be more closely fought.

Kerkyra currently holds down that 2nd position, but Apollon Larissa, Platanias and Panachaiki are within striking distance, with Ergotelis, Doxa Drama and Iraklis also not too far behindand if either can string a sequence together of consecutive victories, they will give themselves every opportunity to move into a promotion position.

As for the bottom end, it will be one hell of a relegation scrap and given the changes in the Greek League structure, there are going to be quite a few disappointed clubs come season’s end.

Trikala for instance who were challenging for promotion to the Super League just last season, are currently in a position where they will find themselves in Delta Ethniki from 2019/20.

The pressure is high for all the clubs in the Football League this season, we will look on with interest to see how the second-half of the season pans out.
