Football League - Under Way

The Football League, Greece’s 2nd tier competition, has finally commenced after various delays and disputes concerning television, about who, how and where the competition would be broadcast.

Here are the completed results from Round 1:
Sparti 1-1 AOX Kissamikos
Trikala 2-3 Doxa Drama
Iraklis 1-0 Irodotos
NFC Volos 7-0 Karaiskakis
Platanias 2-1 Aittitos
Panachaiki 2-2 Aiginiakos
Ergotelis 2-0 Apollon Pontou
Apollon Larissa 2-0 Kerkyra

This year’s Championship will be a keenly fought one as it always is. But there is a little more added spice and intrigue going into this season. Only 1 club will be guaranteed promotion to the Super League for season 2019/2020, as we are right in the middle of a Federation, which is trying to re-organise and reconfigure the Greek Football pyramid.

To the actual field of play and after Round 1, it appears the newly created club out of Volos, which is very well resourced, will be one of the teams to beat for promotion after their round 1 7-0 demolition of Karaiskakis.

Iraklis is another club which will also be looking to return to the top flight and it looks as though, they have assembled a good enough squad to achieve that. They also managed to get off to a good start, winning 1-0 over newly-promoted Irodotos.

Clubs which have been trying to get promoted for the last few years and have come very close, such as: Panachaiki, Doxa Drama, Trikala you’d think will be up there challenging for promotion again, but nothing is ever certain in this league. Only Doxa Drama managed to win their opening match, ironically over Trikala 3-2, while Panachaiki could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Aiginiakos.

Then you have clubs such as Ergotelis, Kerkyra, Platanias who have recent Super League experience and will also be gunning for promotion. The 2 Cretan clubs managed victories on the opening day, Platanias defeating newly promoted Aittitos 2-1, while Ergotelis got the better of Apollon Pontou 2-0. Kerkyra on the other hand were defeated 2-0 by Apollon Larissa.

Whatever happens this season, you know it is going to be at the very least entertaining both on and off the pitch. Stay tuned to Hellas Football as we will be right there to see which club comes out on top in the fight for promotion. By Hellas Football
